Breguet has added a dazzling new chapter to its 250th anniversary celebrations with the unveiling of the Marine Hora Mundi 5555, a limited edition of just 50 pieces that feels less like a watch and more like a dream captured on the wrist. Inspired by NASA’s Black Marble imagery, which reveals the Earth glowing with lights at night, the timepiece tells a story of a world that never sleeps, an ever-moving planet alive with connection and exploration.
The dial is nothing short of magical. Two layers combine to create a vision of Earth as seen from space. The base, crafted in gold and hand-guilloché with meridians and parallels, tricks the eye into seeing a rounded globe, while above it floats a sapphire layer painted entirely by hand. On one side, miniature enamel continents are delicately rendered in reverse before being fired, ensuring their perfect orientation once assembled. On the other, soft clouds drift across the oceans, each set down in enamel by different craftsmen, so every piece in this edition carries its own unique sky. At night, the watch reveals another surprise: glowing cities painted in phosphorescent enamel, a rare and patented innovation that replaces the more common use of Super-LumiNova. It’s a detail that transforms the watch into a living, breathing vision of Earth after dark.
This celebration of artistry also honors history. More than two centuries ago, Abraham-Louis Breguet was named Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy, a role that demanded timepieces precise enough to aid in navigation across uncharted seas. The Marine Hora Mundi 5555 carries that spirit of exploration into the modern age, blending maritime heritage with the limitless horizons of space. For the first time, the Marine case is presented in Breguet gold, its polished and satin-brushed finishes playing with light like waves against a ship’s hull. On the back, a sapphire crystal engraved with the anniversary emblem reveals the calibre 77F1 in motion, complete with an oscillating weight also crafted in Breguet gold.
What lies beneath the artistry is every bit as impressive as the design. The calibre 77F1 allows for instant switching between two pre-programmed time zones with the press of a button, a mechanical feat unmatched elsewhere in watchmaking. Day and night indicators, synchronized cities, and a system of cams and hammers work together in a choreography of precision. Collectors of this rare edition can even customize the cities on the 24-hour disc, ensuring each watch reflects a personal map of the world.
