Three Pixel phone models have had battery issues acknowledged by Google this year, with the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7a suffering from the most serious problems, including units which have caught fire. Now, it appears different battery problems may be affecting two older flagship Pixel phones.
Reports of the Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro suffering from battery swelling have grown over the last couple of months. A thread on the company’s support website was first uploaded by a user in early May showing a phone separating its rear from the device due to its battery swelling.
The reports were spotted by Piunikaweb, and later reported by Android Authority. The original forum post saw the phone’s owner write, “Recently, I noticed that the side panel of the device has started to separate… Upon closer inspection, it appears the battery may be swelling, posing a significant safety risk including the potential for explosion or fire.”
In July, another user reported a similar issue on their Pixel 7 Pro. They soon followed up to say they had a positive experience through Google’s support tools, but they didn’t clarify whether they were given a replacement device or if they had their battery repaired.
Since those reports, the same thread has seen more people share their experience bringing the total number of reports to 10 by early Sept. Many of the people say they have had a positive experience from Google’s support team, but some say they’ve struggled to get help from the company.
Only one report refers to the standard Pixel 7, with the rest being Pixel 7 Pro owners. None of these owners have had their devices catch fire, which has been an issue on Pixel 6a and Pixel 7a phones.

Google has yet to officially acknowledge these reports, but PCMag has asked Google for a statement. We’ll update this article when we hear back.
If you’re experiencing a similar issue with your battery swelling on a Pixel phone, contact Google’s support services as soon as possible for advice on what to do next.
If you own a Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro that hasn’t suffered from battery swelling, ensure you inspect the rear of the device from time to time. You should also avoid leaving it unaccompanied on charge for long periods of time, in case there is an issue in the future.
