As someone who regularly tests mattresses and mattress toppers, I was curious to try the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper. Namely because the price point is much lower than other toppers I’ve tested, but the reviews are great – a unicorn for consumers. But would it cut it as one of the best mattress toppers in my tests?
The topper arrived quickly and was relatively easy to open set up. I loved that there was no chemical smell when opening it up, as a person who is sensitive to strong smells. This is due to the CertiPUR-US standard met by Viscosoft products, which means this topper is free of formaldehyde, heavy metals, and other junk that I don’t want my family sleeping on.
I was initially concerned that I would find the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper too soft, as it feels like a marshmallow out of the box. Usually, I sleep nightly on the Helix ErgoAlign Mattress Topper, which feels firmer at first touch.
I was pleasantly surprised to find the Viscosoft was (as the name implies) soft, yet supportive. I sank into the topper when I snuggled in to read for the evening, but woke up with my back in great shape. And, while the thermoregulation was not as robust as some of the best cooling mattress toppers, which are designed specifically for that purpose, I woke up feeling cool and comfortable.
Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper review − tried and tested
This mattress topper is a great budget choice for users of any age, but the price makes it particularly appealing to parents like myself. It’s not always feasible to purchase kids a brand-new mattress, and college dorms are notorious for their subpar beds, so looking for the best mattress toppers for dorm beds is a good, pocket-friendly alternative. As I mentioned above, the reviews of the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper online are great.
I eagerly began testing to see if it lived up to the hype. When I set this topper up, I struggled with the corner straps a little. They appear to sit closer to the corners of the mattress than some other toppers, which causes them to pop off occasionally, both during setup and while sleeping. Nevertheless, a snug-fitted sheet kept the topper in place pretty well. When my teen slept on it, the mattress topper did shift a bit overnight. He is a very active sleeper, so this is something to consider if you move around overnight.
As I slept on and performed experiments on this product over the course of our standard 30-day trial, I kept notes on how I felt upon waking up, wear-and-tear, thermoregulation, and more. This is how we test mattress toppers to give shoppers the information they need to buy well. I weighed the features of the mattress topper against the price point, as I do for all products. Overall, I completed my review of the Viscosoft High Density mattress topper, eager to recommend it to anyone on a budget who wants a better night’s sleep.

Who is the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper best for?
(Image credit: Future / Meg St-Esprit)
All sleep positions: Viscosoft states that this mattress topper is medium-firm, which I would agree with (despite my initial impression). This is the firmness most sleepers prefer, and it works well for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and side sleepers.
Athletes and those with mild joint pain: If you enjoy a good workout that leaves you a bit sore afterwards, the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper is a great choice. The supportive memory foam cushions joints well and prevents hotspots. It’s also a good choice for sleepers with mild skeletal concerns, though a product designed specifically for back pain may be best for more serious concerns.
Budget shoppers: Getting a good night’s sleep can be pricey, with many mattress toppers costing hundreds of dollars – and a whole new mattress costing thousands. The Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper is one of the most affordable on the market, but performs like pricier products. This makes it a solid choice for kids, teens, college dorms, or anyone on a budget.

Pressure relief: The ViscoSoft Memory Foam Mattress Topper is extremely comfortable to sleep on. That marshmallow feel that concerned me out of the box? It feels great to sink into it at the end of a busy day. The initial soft feel disguises a firm and supportive foam core that prevents hot spots and reenergizes joints overnight. While I would not categorize this topper as orthopedic (and neither would Viscosoft) it provides quality musculoskeletal support for most sleepers. My Sealy innerspring mattress underneath is very firm, and the combination provides excellent weight-bearing capabilities. The memory foam of the mattress topper springs back up quickly once depressed, and when I tested it with a weight, it did not leave any indentation.
Thermoregulation: As a middle-aged woman in a historic home without air conditioning, I am the perfect candidate to discuss the cooling properties of sleep products. Waking up clammy and sweaty is a common issue for women my age, but that did not happen while sleeping on the ViscoSoft Memory Foam Mattress Topper. The woven cover is breathable, and the type of foam used does not radiate heat like some other memory foam brands do. I did wake up a little warm some mornings, but overall found the breathability of this product to be excellent.
Motion isolation: During our testing process at H&G, we set a glass of water on a mattress next to a weight to see how well partners will sleep without disturbing one another – this is called motion isolation. I expected this product to perform poorly in this category due to the initial soft feel. When I conducted the water glass test, it fell over. I even struggled to balance the glass on its own without the weight on the bed. However, sleeping on the ViscoSoft MemoryFoam Mattress Topper is a different experience. The motion isolation feels comparable to the Brooklyn Bedding Copperflex 310 that I recently tested, so I’d still conclude that this topper is a good choice for couples.
Edge support: Despite the many reasons I liked this topper, the edge support is its biggest drawback. The soft feel means the edge collapses easily when sitting on the bed. For a larger bed, this may not be a huge concern. Our family tested the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper on a twin daybed, which doubles as a couch or lounge spot in our house. This created some issues when using the bed for sitting rather than sleeping, but it was not enough of a drawback to outweigh the pros in my opinion.
Value for money: Given my experience sleeping on the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper and the outcome of my testing, I believe this is a great product for the cost. The price point is below comparable products, and the 90-day trial period means there is little risk to giving it a shot.
Practical points: Viscosoft advertises free shipping in three days or less, and this product arrived in just two. The box for the twin size was not heavy. I carried it inside myself, opened the product, and it was ready to use in a few minutes. The Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper comes with a 90-day sleep trial, like all of their products, but I was able to decide I liked this product after just 30, so 90 days feels more than adequate. There is also a 5-year warranty, which is generous at this price point. The cover is also removable and washable. Overall, this Viscosoft topper feels like a practical choice.
How does the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper rate online?
The online world loves this mattress topper. Over 3,000 reviews on the Viscosoft site average 4.5 stars out of 5, and most customers took the time to write a few sentences raving about the product. During the summer months, the ViscoSoft High Density Mattress Topper also claimed the Number 1 product spot on Amazon for shoppers searching for Twin XL mattress topper – the size of a college dorm bed – so it is clearly a winner for families of students starting college. Honestly, I get the hype.

How does the Viscosoft High Density Mattress Topper compare to other mattress toppers?
Just before testing this product, I tested another mattress topper that’s popular with college students – the Brooklyn Bedding Copperflex 310. The Copperflex is a bit pricier, ranging from $185 to $372, but they sleep very similarly. The finish details of the Copperflex feel a bit more high-end, but not enough to justify the price differential, in my opinion.
Should I buy the ViscoSoft High Density Mattress Topper?
After a month of sleeping, note-taking, testing, and careful consideration, I can’t wait to tell my friends about the ViscoSoft Memory Foam Matress Topper. With many families watching budgets and pinching pennies, finding high quality products at a low price point is more crucial than ever. This mattress topper is a great way to upgrade a bed without spending thousdands of dollars on a whole new mattress.
No one product is the right fit for everyone. I did note that the ViscoSoft Memory Foam Mattress Topper does not thermoregulate quite as well as the Helix ErgoAlign Mattress Topper I sleep on most nights. ViscoSoft does make a cooling topper that starts at $200.

How we test mattress toppers
(Image credit: Future / Meg St-Esprit)
When reviewing a new product, I aim to provide shoppers with the details and care I would expect when reading a review as a consumer. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to return an item that doesn’t meet our expectations, so my goal is to give readers as much info as possible before they click ‘add to cart’.
As part of our process for testing sleep products we not only use the product as any consumer would, but also test various features during the review period. I slept on this mattress topper myself for 30 days, tested the performance of the topper via a set of simple experiments, and welcomed feedback from my whole family (including the cat, who loves to nap on anything cozy).
We use the same criteria to test each mattress topper at Homes & Gardens. We take note of the thermoregulation, pressure relief, motion isolation, and edge support through a variety of testing methods, as well as daily use for at least 30 days. We lay in a variety of positions to test pressure relief. How does the mattress topper feel when sleeping on our back, side, or stomach? I also kept track of how I felt each morning—sweaty and clammy or comfortably cool.
We assessed motion isolation by lying side-by-side and moving around. We also slept on this topper to gather real-time motion isolation data. In addition to that testing, I filled a wine glass with water and placed a hand weight next to it to assess how much compressing one part of the topper affects other areas—does the wine glass tip over?
We assessed edge support by sitting and lying on the edge of the bed to see how the edge handled pressure and weight. Does the topper compress so that you feel like you are sliding, or is it firm across the entire surface? I also set a hand weight on the edge of the topper to provide consumers with a visual of the topper’s edge support.
By scanning verified customer reviews on shopping platforms and independent review sites, I was able to see if there were frequent comments that came up repeatedly. Do consumers all take issue with one particular feature? I also took note of the delivery process, warranty, and length of sleep trial to provide consumers with all of the information they need to make an informed purchase. We also don’t shy away from talking about price. It’s important that shoppers have all the information before making a big purchase. If there are frequent discounts or loyalty programs, we note those too. To learn more about how we test mattress toppers, you can consult our expert guide.
